Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, and lies nearly 120 miles off the Spanish mainland. In more recent times Majorca has reinvented itself with an emphasis on more upmarket tourism with visitors encouraged to explore the island's beautiful coastline and interior. Palma is the commercial and cultural centre of Majorca, the depth of history, culture, nightlife and shopping facilities here often takes visitors by surprise, and it is a popular long weekend city break destination amongst travellers The airport is about 5 miles east of the city. Flying time from most UK airports is around 2 to 2 and half hours. On arrival it is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time

Local food and drinks. Majorca is a small island with fertile ground and indigenous black pigs, Majorcan cuisine tends to be based around pork, seafood, vegetables and large amounts of olive oil. The local chorizo sausages called sobrasada that are delicious. Fish also forms a substantial part of the Majorcan diet. Real Majorcan food can be found in the less touristy areas inland.
Holidaymakers those who like British food will not be disappointed. In most of the tourist resorts you will find many fast food outlets, all day breakfasts, and even the traditional British roast dinner. The local beer is San Miguel and it is available in most bars and restaurants. A lot of the wine drunk in Majorca is imported from mainland Spain but Majorca also has its own, growing, wine industry. Another Majorcan speciality is Hierbas, a liqueur made from herbs. In terms of soft drinks, the fresh orange juice is delicious. Something else worth trying is horchata, almond milk, which is available in most bars.
